Paddlesports at the forefront of recreation in Michigan

State of Michigan Recreation Role

Recreation responsibilities in Southeastern Michigan :

    1) development of a state-wide recreation plan.
    2) provision of large-scale recreation to serve the inter-county recreation needs of people.
    3) acquisition and management of natural lands.
    4) protection of natural resource areas and wildlife for conservation purposes.
    5) assistance to lower levels of government for development of recreation.

Recreation includes paddlesports – canoe and kayaking.

Paddlesports should come before motorboat fishing activities :
   - more accessible and desirable to the general everyday public.
   - kayaks and canoes cost far less than powerboats and don’t pollute the environment.
   - paddlesports provide much needed exercise, reduces stress levels, and is quiet.
   - launching a kayak or canoe can be easily done without highly expensive concrete trailer ramps
   - paddlesports adds to the economy via ecotourism , many travel quite far to paddle scenic areas.

Waterways and scenic areas are very valuable as public recreational areas.
Water is a shared resource that interconnects communities.
It enhances the tourism industry and increase the quality of life for all .

A navigable stream / creek / river is just as important as a walking / hiking / jogging / running / bicycle trail.

Fiscal respect in Paddling sports versus fishing ?

Does paddlesports get the same fiscal respect as fishing in Michigan ?
What is the $ dollar value of Paddlesports to the Michigan economy versus the fishing industry ?

Canoes and Kayaks dominate boating throughout the USA
http://www.examiner.com/kayaking-in-detroit/canoes-and-kayaks-dominate-boating

Out of all the possible boat types available to the public at large
(16 years or older) over 20 % of them choose to use a kayak or canoe.

Paddlesports provides revenue to the economy via purchases in local communities for lodging, restaurants, supplies, gasoline, shopping, etc.

McCaslin Lake Road Canoe Kayak Launch

Argentine Township / Linden Community  5 Year Parks and Recreation Plan

Shiawassee River Water Trail --- Draft –  January 2010 ---  Gould Engineering, Inc.-

Advocating the use of the Shiawassee River as a recreational water trail is highly recommended.
Development of the water trail through Argentine Township is an expansion of the 10 mile water trail system already developed to the east from the Village of Holly through the City of Fenton and
City of Linden.
By continuing efforts through Argentine Township a total of 30 miles of water trail will be created from the Village of Holly to the Village of Byron in Shiawassee County and extending into Saginaw County. The Argentine Shiawassee River Clean Up Committee is a local volunteer group that has made tremendous strides to remove debris and clear areas for safe navigation of the river. They are considered stewards of the river and are strongly encouraged to continue their efforts of protecting and promoting safe and appropriate use of the water trail.

Currently, the McCaslin Lake Road canoe/kayak launch site provides the only access to
the 10 mile stretch between the City of Linden and the Village of Bryon.
The
establishment of this unimproved launch is strictly the result of heavy use by local
canoeists and kayakers. Fortunately, the township recognized this growing population
and acquired land at this site for future improvements. However, additional land
acquisition may be needed depending on physical restraints of the present site. These
improvements will provide safe access to the water, nearby parking, improved staging
and traffic circulation, signage, benches and trash receptacles, with strong
consideration toward universal design.

The township also owns 10 acres on Oakwood Drive with access to the river and approximately 2 miles west of McCaslin Lake Road. This would provide another launch opportunity midway between the launches at McCaslin Lake Road and the Village of Byron. Important factors for establishing a water trail are the provision of safe and convenient access to a navigable waterway with unobstructed passageways. The water trail between McCaslin Lake Road and the Village of Byron is un-navigable in some locations. Therefore, other trail improvements should include removing litter, clearing log
jams for navigability, installing way finding and educational signs, and providing safe installing way finding and educational signs, and providing safe portage areas where needed.

Should it be necessary, narrow or low underpasses (i.e. small culverts or low bridges) should be replaced with larger openings. However, Bridges or overpasses are costly to reconstruct, therefore, an
alternative is to provide safe portage areas. A durable path should be provided for carrying
watercraft, which should consist of more natural, engineered facilities such as pervious pavers with
openings for vegetation to grow through to help retain the natural river bank appearance, along with providing proper roadside signage forewarning motor vehicle traffic of potential portage crossings. All construction along the river, within the floodplain and/or wetlands, is subject to approval by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment (MDNRE).

A detailed “Shiawassee River Water Trail Plan” would help officially designate and
delineate a Shiawassee River Heritage Water Trail route, and identify trail-related
facilities that should be constructed and improvements that should be implemented to
establish a safe and navigable trail corridor for both recreational and educational
pursuits in an ecologically sensitive manner. The designation of an official water trail may
further instill a sense of trail stewardship among canoeists/kayakers to respect the quality
of the water and become good caretakers of the river.

Specific trail improvements and support facilities that should be identified on the plan may
include providing parking facilities, restrooms, handicapped access, and picnicking areas; removing litter and fallen trees for navigability; installing way finding and educational signs; and improving underpasses or providing safe providing safe portaging areas with durable paths and crossing signs.

***__ New section Shiawassee River CLEARED ___****

Shiawassee River Heritage Trail

You can now paddle from Fenton's Bush Park to US 23 near Lake Ponemah !

-----Paddlesports is exploding in popularity, it’s cheaper than powerboating.

The secton of the river is now navigable via canoe or kayak-- -approximately 3 miles.

Takeout at US 23 is easy with great access making for a great scenic paddle.

Adventurous people could probably make it all the way to Linden from Bush Park--approx. 6 miles.

Hard core paddlers could start in Holly at Waterworks Park, portage the dam in Fenton and continue into Linden - approx 13 miles.

Various teams used chainsaws to remove many large fallen trees and log jams.

A lot of debris and garbage was also picked up making the river a lot cleaner.

Even the fisherman will be happy as new habitat was created by

securing the logs via cable ties along the banks of the river.

The river is a lot healthier and will flow much easier now.

Bush Park - Fenton,MI on Saturday July 18, 2009

Jim Wright, Tim Julian and I worked on cleaning up the Shiawassee River from Bush Park in Fenton out to US-23 on Saturday, June 27, 2009. We cleaned up around 15 trees blocking the river but there are another 11 to go. One of the trees is around 2 feet in diameter and has another sitting on top of it. Some additional ones may appear as the water level drops. A new one has also fallen from Bush Park since we were down the river. We are planning another go at it on July 18, 2009. We would greatly appreciate any help in doing the work. The water is deep in spots and we found that waders were more trouble than they were worth. They kept filling up and then becoming hard to move in, when the water got shallow again. We also spent time tying logs to the banks with wire to hold them in place. This took quite a bit of time. It appears that no one has cleaned this section of the river in at least 10 years. There is a tremendous amount of trash floating in the river through there, so trash removing people are also needed.

If you are interested in helping us, we are planning on meeting at Bush Park in Fenton at 8:00, Saturday July 18, 2009. Row boats to put trash and tools in would be especially helpful. Please contact if you are interested.
