Proper kayak paddling

Perhaps we can all learn a bit from this slow motion clip
a.) use the legs a lot
b.) rotate the torso of the body
c.) lean forward using abdominal muscles

Navigable creeks, streams, rivers, waterways and the law

In regards to legal navigability of a waterway, for the public :

- they merely have to be used; to be considered navigable.

By court definition: ""a capacity for meeting the needs and necessities of the people""

Historical commercial uses like floating logs downstream during the lumbering era helps of course

The public has rights in navigable water.

Any water which in its natural state, is capable of, and has been used, for the purposes:

a.) commerce

b.) travel

c.) trade

is considered a navigable waterway by the court systems in a large number of cases.

The floating of logs during the lumbering days was held to be an act of commerce.

It also applies to the movement of animal hides for the fur trade via canoe or kayak.

Travel of people, food, supplies, etc. both upstream or downstream counts as well.

While the log floatation test was the old yardstick

by which many "navigability" claims were measured;

-it is "how" modern waterways best serve the public (as historical intent of law)

that allows recreational usage to be considered in the determination of navigability.

The capacity for beneficial public service is paramount towards being deemed navigable.

Courts adopted a rule of "capacity for use to meet public necessity" as the true test.

Entitlement to paddle upon any given waterway involves the "capability of sustaining travel".

Waterways are public paths, expected to be open to travel and other uses.

This public expectation is still valid today in a modern society.

Sidenote:

My advice is to avoid confrontation with homeowners by merely saying

"sorry, we'll be gone momentarily - we meant no harm or disrespect -have a nice day"

Yelling at each other over rights, entitlement, etc. is simply non-productive and stressful.

Do not engage, simply keep moving and minimize the time spent at that location.

High Definition Video Shiawassee River

Fall 2009 paddle along the Shiawassee River in the Holly to Fenton area of Michigan. Trying out a new waterproof camera with image stabilization and high definition capabilities. The camera is mounted to kayak via StickyPod suction cup tripod for hands free filming operation. The HeadWatersTrails Inc. group in Holly works hard to keep the river navigable almost all year long. A State of Michigan Heritage Water Trail is established between Holly and Fenton along the Shiawassee.

Bush Park - Fenton,MI on Saturday July 18, 2009

Jim Wright, Tim Julian and I worked on cleaning up the Shiawassee River from Bush Park in Fenton out to US-23 on Saturday, June 27, 2009. We cleaned up around 15 trees blocking the river but there are another 11 to go. One of the trees is around 2 feet in diameter and has another sitting on top of it. Some additional ones may appear as the water level drops. A new one has also fallen from Bush Park since we were down the river. We are planning another go at it on July 18, 2009. We would greatly appreciate any help in doing the work. The water is deep in spots and we found that waders were more trouble than they were worth. They kept filling up and then becoming hard to move in, when the water got shallow again. We also spent time tying logs to the banks with wire to hold them in place. This took quite a bit of time. It appears that no one has cleaned this section of the river in at least 10 years. There is a tremendous amount of trash floating in the river through there, so trash removing people are also needed.

If you are interested in helping us, we are planning on meeting at Bush Park in Fenton at 8:00, Saturday July 18, 2009. Row boats to put trash and tools in would be especially helpful. Please contact if you are interested.

Notice I said body and not arm ? There is a reason why.

The Basics of the Forward Stroke

The first thing to know about efficient canoe paddling is that the most powerful muscles in the upper body are in the back and shoulders.

The muscles of the arm such as the biceps and triceps are best used in a supporting role, not as the major movers.

The arm muscles will tire long before the big muscles of the back.
