Dam to be removed
New grant to remove Shiatown Dam
SHIAWASSEE COUNTY -- On Monday, a grant will be announced to begin
removing a dam in Shiawassee County, where a Flint girl died. The
Friends of the Shiawassee River and the Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative
Network will be announcing a $62,500 grant to help in the restoration
of the Shiawassee River as part of the dam removal process at Shiatown
Dam.The event will take place at the former Shiatown Dam site. In May of last year, 12 year old Kyesha Pascal from Flint was crossing the dam and lost her footing, falling into the Shiawassee River. She drowned.
In attendance will be the Friends of the Shiawassee River, and representatives of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, along with other officials.
According to a news release, in the fall of 2012, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources began removal of the Shiatown Dam.
